Recycled Smoked Glass

A Commitment to a Greener Tomorrow

Kafka Granite has become a pioneer in recycling landfill or waste products for use as aggregates in precast concrete, terrazzo flooring and countertops, epoxy overlay surfacing, pathway materials, and more. Kafka Granite’s line of recycled aggregates started as a joint-venture between three Wisconsin companies: Kafka Granite, Wausau Tile, and Kohler Corporation. Kafka Granite began recycling all of Kohler’s reject porcelain toilets and sinks, and now also recycles other landfilled materials including Kohler’s slag, fire brick, and gypsum. Kafka has since secured suppliers of computer and television glass and two-sided mirror, both of which have become popular recycled materials in the epoxy resin market.

In addition to Kafka Granite’s line of recycled products, the small, family owned company has taken measures to increase the efficiency and decrease the ecological footprint of their manufacturing process. Some things are as simple as utilizing second-hand pallets. However, others are more complicated. Notably, Kafka Granite has installed a unique state-of-the-art dust collection system that runs throughout the plant. It acts as a large vacuum to collect dust that would otherwise be polluted into the air. After collection, the dust is reused in the creation of other products. This system is one of the ways Kafka Granite is continually working towards a more sustainable operation and a greener tomorrow.
